Commonwealth Day: Queen’s baton relay starts today

Charlestown, Nevis – Today which is celebrated as Commonwealth Day, signals the start of the Queen’s Baton Relay.

The Baton leaves from Buckingham Palace in London on a 388 day journey through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth which includes St. Kitts-Nevis with a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II.
 
At the Gold Coast Opening Ceremony of the XX1 Commonwealth Games on April 4, 2018, Her Majesty or a representative of the queen will remove the message from the Baton and read it aloud to officially open the Games.

The Queen’s Baton will arrive in the Federation on the 24th day of June, 2017 from Montserrat. It shall remain here until June 27th before moving on to the island of Anguilla.

The Gold Coast baton was made from re-claimed plastic collected from Gold Coast beaches and waterways, macadamia wood, engraved stainless steel and also uses LED lights.

Its colour which includes hot pink changes as the baton is passed between people.
