BASSETERRE (6TH December, 2019): Local stakeholders of the St. Kitts cruise sector, went on board the Coral Princess to welcome the Captain and crew on the ship’s inaugural call to the destination.

Belonging to the Princess Cruises line, the Coral Princess arrived with a maximum capacity of 2,581 passengers, and is scheduled to make a total of two calls to the island. The vessel, along with sister ship Island Princess, was launched in 2002. Coral Princess and Island Princess are part of the only five Panamax ships operated by Princess Cruises. Those ships will make a total 19 calls to the island.

Captain Darius Balana said St. Kitts is one of his favorite ports of call, and he is looking forward to taste some of the local cuisine.

“I have been here before and toured the island, so this time I would like to sample some of the local foods,” Captain Balana said. “So before you leave please recommend a place that sells the best local dishes.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Carlene Henry-Morton, led a delegation of stakeholders on board the ship to participate in a plaque exchange ceremony to commemorate the inaugural event.

“One of the things we do very well on the island is prepare delicious local dishes, because we have a rich culinary culture,” Mrs Morton said. “St. Kitts restaurants are known not just for our world-class food but also drinks. Delicious and healthy beverages featuring fruits and leaves from our local trees of life.”

Also visiting the destination was the Celebrity Reflection with a maximum capacity of 3,030 passengers, Celebrity Summit with 2,450 passengers and the Sea Dream II with a maximum capacity of 110 passengers.St. Kitts has become widely recognized as one of the top cruise destinations in the Caribbean. The destination exceeded one million cruise passenger arrivals for the first time in 2018, and then did it again in 2019, becoming the only destination in the OECS ever to achieve this consecutive milestone.

St. Kitts now enjoys marquee port status, a category, typically only much larger destinations enjoy.
