BASSETERRE, St Kitts, Jan 16, SKNPULSE – The Leewards Islands at last has named a 14-man squad for this month’s regional Super50 to be hosted in Antigua and Barbados. The side which is to be led by Nevisian Kieran Powell includes veteran West Indies player, Marlon Samuels of Jamaica.
The Leeward Islands Hurricanes have been boosted with the addition of Samuels who has not turned out in the tournament in three seasons. Further, the Trinidad and Tobago pair of Kevon Cooper and Akeal Hosein are also included in the Leeward Islands squad for the January 24 to February 18 campaign.
The Hurricanes will be captained by Nevisian Kieran Powell and ably assisted by Antiguan Rahkeem Cornwall, his deputy. The squad also includes young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph.
The squad as it is comprised should create challenges for opposition teams. The Leeward Islands will be playing in Zone A which includes defending champions, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, the Windward Islands Volcanoes, the West Indies Under 19’s and Kent Spitfires, the English County team.
According to a release from CMC, Samuels is veteran of 71 Tests and 187 One-Day Internationals, his experience coupled with Cooper, Cornwall and Powell should provide depth in bowling and batting for the Hurricanes.
Antiguan Batsman Jermaine Otto is the only debutant included in the squad.
Hurricanes will hold their first training session as a unit on Monday at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.
