Leeward Island Hurricanes and Barbados Pride Play To A Draw

SKNP,  Monday 14, November,  2016 –  The Leeward Island Hurricanes played their first encounter at Warner Park in the Regional 4-day Digicel sponsored tournament and if it’s any indication to go by cricket lovers in the Leewards will have a lot to cheer about. 


The game which started on Friday saw Leewards betting first and amassing a total of 377. Opening the batting were former West Indies opener Kieran Powell and Kacey Carty. The opening pair didn’t last long as Kacey cheaply and Powell followed soon there after for 26. Partnerships there after helped the Leewards to a competitive score led by Bonner,  (94), Cornwall,  (84) and Hamilton 65.


Barbados posted 237 all out.  Williams posted the top score with 45. Cornwall who seemingly has transitioned his form into the Regional tournament as he collect his first 5 – Wicket haul of the tournament.  His final figures were 5/115. Gavin Tongue was also among the wickets. He picked up 3/27.


With a lead of 140, the Leeward Islands were one step closer to victory. Barbados not deterred picked up some early wickets that created doubts in the Leewards camp. Cornwall came to his team’s rescued as he steadied the ship with Hodge who scored a half century. 


Needing 305 to win,  Barbados lost an early wicket and look to reach the target as they batted aggressively. The fall of wickets however slowed down their run rate and at the end of the days play they were 235/5.

End result: A drawn game.
