No official word from St. Kitts; St. Lucia’s Acting Police Chief confirms six St. Lucians in RSS squad in Basseterre

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 13, 2018 – Although the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is yet to issue an official statement on the presence of the Regional Security Forces (RSS) on the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis, the St. Lucia Times has confirmed that six members of the Special Services Unit (SSU) of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) are in Basseterre, the St. Kitts capital.

According to the St. Lucia Times, St. Lucia’s Acting Commissioner of Police, Milton Desir said “the six Saint Lucian officers, some of whom are understood to have been recalled from vacation leave, are expected to spend three weeks in St. Kitts and Nevis in the first instance.”

The Times reported that the six St. Lucian policemen left Castries “on Wednesday to join officers from the Regional Security System (RSS), now in St Kitts and Nevis to assist in the battle against crime.”

The St. Lucia Times said the St. Lucian officers “were dispatched to assist St. Kitts and Nevis against the backdrop of reports that the country has been experiencing an unprecedented crime wave that includes shootings, murders and armed robberies.”

“The St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce recently acknowledged that crime had reached a new and dangerous level, threatening the peace and stability of the federation and its economy,” the St. Lucia Times reported.

It said there have been more than 20 murders reported for the year so far.

There have been 24 murders for 2018.
