NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (June 25, 2019) — Taiwanese President Her Excellency Tsai Ing-wen, will visit Nevis to break ground for the US$3million Pinney’s Recreational Park project on July 14, 2019. It will be the first time that a head of state from that country will set foot on Nevis.

Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, made the announcement at his monthly press conference in Cabinet room at Pinney’s Estate on June 25, 2019. The multi-million dollar project, which will provide “green space” on the outskirts of Charlestown, is funded by the Republic of China (Taiwan), in collaboration with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).

“We are having a very special event that has been slated for July 14 and that is the ground breaking ceremony for the recreational park at Pinney’s…

“What is so important about July 14? July 14 we will have the ground breaking ceremony but it won’t be an ordinary ground breaking ceremony because no less a person than the President of Taiwan herself, will be at Pinney’s to do that ground breaking herself,” he said.

Mr. Brantley believes that the Republic of China (Taiwan) official’s inaugural visit to Nevis will be of significance to the island.

“I believe that is significant for us because we have had, I think, five presidents who have visited before from Taiwan, none have crossed The Narrows. This is the first time that a president from Taiwan will touch Nevisian soil,” he said.

Mr. Brantley, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Federal Government and Minister of Tourism on Nevis, spoke of the project’s funding and some of the features it will offer the Nevisian public on completion.

“The project is a significant one for us, and it’s a project valued just about US$3million. I think, of that, the NIA has committed $370,000, and the Taiwanese have committed the balance. So I think this is a win-win situation for all of us.

“The idea is to create a park which will feature jogging trails, picnic area, children’s recreational zone, large central area which would continue to accommodate large events such as the Culturama Food Fair… The project is expected to take just over two years to complete and so we look forward very much for that long-awaited project,” he said.

Mr. Brantley also used the opportunity to pay homage to the government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for having stationed on Nevis Mr. Vincent Lai, Consultant and Head of the Technical Mission on St. Kitts and Nevis, who is leading the project and is doing an outstanding job.

The Tourism Minister publicly commended Mr. John Hanley, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, and his team for their ongoing work related to the project which he said is now on a good trajectory.
