PRESS RELEASE…(October 15, 2018) — First form students Imogen Archibald, Cjahnte’ Griffin and Iyanna Browne have joined approximately 50 students in securing academic scholarships from the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union Limited (NCCU), since the programme started in the mid-1980s.

The trio, in the presence of their parents as well as representatives of the NCCU’s Board of Directors, management team and staff, received the financial scholarships on Monday morning during a ceremony in the institution’s Conference Room.

NCCU employees Zahvelisia Claxton and Patulia Huggins offered encouraging words to the students, reminding that the scholarships signaled the Credit Union’s investment in their future and that they should always strive for excellence.

Archibald and Griffin are students of the Charlestown Secondary School while Browne is the awardee from the Gingerland Secondary School.
The morning’s activity was twinned with donations to Pink Lily Cancer Care and the Nevis Island Administration’s Seniors’ Division of the Social Services Department.

In accepting the donation on behalf of the Seniors’ Division, Trudy Prentice spoke of the Credit Union’s support of seniors.
“I just want to say thank you very much to the Management and staff of the Nevis Credit Union for always being there with us, for partnering with us over the years,” she said, adding that “your contribution will go a very long way in helping us realise our goals for this year.”
Pink Lily’s Tracy Parris also had kind words for the NCCU as she reflected on the longstanding relationship between the two organisations.
“The Nevis Co-operative Credit Union, they have been supportive of Pink Lily for years now – I can’t even say the number of years – but I just want to say thank you on behalf of Leah; the Founder and CEO, myself, Cindy and all the volunteers and all the people that Pink Lily have been able to help,” she said, much to the delight of the attendees.
Presentations to the Seniors’ Division and Pink Lily Cancer Care were made by NCCU employees Londy Esdaille and Ken Williams, respectively.
Monday’s ceremony is an annual exercise as the institution continues to show its corporate-social responsibility, particularly during International Credit Union Week. According to General Manager Sydney Newton, this is accomplished by “making donations to worthy causes in the community as well as to deserving students who receive the NCCU’s annual scholarship awards.”

The continued injection into the NCCU’s Scholarship Programme and donation to Pink Lily Cancer Care and Nevis’ seniors, via the local government, falls in line with the seven cooperative principles for Credit Unions, one of which is “Concern for Community.”
